Overview:
In India, almost 92% of children drop out of schools by the age of 14. That should not sound incredible, considering that this figure is almost the same for developed economies. However, in the case of developed countries, almost all of the dropouts get funneled into vocational education that guarantees skills development and ensures employability. In stark contrast, this is a non existing sector in India.
Under our skill school initiative, Career Launcher also partners with the Government for the Industrial Training Institutes which comes under the Public Private Partnership scheme for Centers of Excellence announced by them.
The ITIs are adopted, in a number of states and vocational skills are enahnced to impart relevant and up-to-date training to enhance the local employment opportunities and feed local industry with fresh talent. Training at these institutes is varied, but in the vicinity of entry level technicians such as plumbers and electricians.
In the year 2007-08, three centers each, in Haryana and Punjab, were adopted. In the current year, 2008-09, more centers in Haryana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh are expected to be adopted.
As per our estimates, India will train 40,000 people in vocational skills at the ITIs and this figure is expected to grow upto 200,000 in the next three years.
